The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to #Navanethem_Pillay (“Navi”) in recognition of her outstanding efforts to promote peace and uphold international law.
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated extraordinary courage and integrity in paving the way toward a more inclusive global legal order. This year’s laureate has played a pivotal role in ensuring the prosecution of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
Navi Pillay’s unwavering commitment to universal legal principles and her steadfast moral compass have remained defining characteristics throughout her distinguished career.
Born into a family of Indian Tamil descent under the apartheid regime in Durban, South Africa, Pillay went on to become a pioneering lawyer and legal trailblazer, confronting deeply entrenched structural discrimination, segregation, and exclusion.
A common thread connects her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood against apartheid with her subsequent service as a judge in some of the most significant international judicial proceedings of our time.
This year’s laureate has substantially expanded both the scope and influence of international law. She has served as a judge in South Africa’s High Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), and the International Criminal Court (ICC).
